Alchemical Recipes Empty
PostSubject: Alchemical Recipes   Alchemical Recipes Icon_minitimeWed Nov 20, 2013 1:11 am

First off, i have NOT tried ALL of these. If anyone has experience with some of these, and wish to add to them or whatever, feel free to let me know.

Extraction of Philosophic Mercury – Spirits of Wine

Squeeze juice from grapes, enough to fill the jug. Supplement with grape juice if necessary.

Add some dried herb if you wish to ‘sign’ the alcohol.

Add brewer’s yeast to a small amount of hot water, stir well, and add to the juice.

Add sugar, about a half a cup per gallon.

Close jug with fermentation lock.

Ferment at about 27°C for 2-4 weeks.

Gas bubbles will begin in 1-3 days.

Fermentation is complete when bubbles stop forming and the plant matter falls to the bottom of the jug.

Transfer contents to a boiling flask and distill with refux in a water bath as hot as 98°C. Repeat until all the wine has been through one distillation. Discard the leftover soup.

Transfer the distillate to a boiling flask and distill with reflex in a water bath. Repeat until all the distillate has been through its second distillation.

Repeat the distillations for a total of at least 7 distillations.

A final purity of 95% is desired. Continue rectification until purity is reached.

Spagyric Tincture

Begin at planetary hour on planetary day.

Consult horoscope regarding concerned planet and check the position of the moon.

Offer prayers to God, vibrate God-Name, state intent, and perform rituals if desired.

Grind the herb

Use hands to connect with the herb’s energy.

Focus on releasing divine power in herb and self.

Develop relationship between self, herb, planet and the counterpart in your psyche.

Use mortar and pestle

Fine particles more easily release their alchemical properties.

Macerate the herb with rectified spirits of wine.

A ratio of between 5:1 and 8:1 is appropriate. E.g. 50 grams of herb would use between 250 and 400ml of alcohol.

Use a mason jar. Do not fill more than halfway.

Seal the bottle with plastic wrap before capping.

No metal should ever touch a spagyric tincture.

Digest the maceration for a philosophic month at 30-40°C.

Shake maceration twice per day.

Focus on intent and relationship with planet and God/Adonai.

Transfer maceration into a press and then decant into a filtered funnel.

Use a glass funnel stopped with a cotton ball and lined with a paper coffee filter.

Funnel liquid into its final container.

Dark amber glass with a pipette is appropriate.

Extract the water soluble salts from the herb body according to the Alchemical Art.

Digest the tincture for another philosophical month.

Shake the tincture twice per day.

Consume the tincture at bedtime on appropriate planetary day and ruminate on the planet, herb and the nature of my initiation.

Records any dreams or visions that occur during the night.

Extracting Alchemical Sulfur from Dried Herb using Steam Distillation

Soak a dried herb in distilled water for 1-3.

Use 50g of herbs per 1l flask

Use enough water to fill the flask to half

Keep the flask/herb in the refrigerator to prevent fermentation.

Assemble the Steam Distillation Train

Boiling flask with herbs on hotplate connected to condenser.

Boiling flask with distilled water on a hotplate with glass tube connected to first flask

Receiving flash resting in water/ice bath

Make the apparatus as air-tight as possible

Heat both flasks to boiling.

Once the first flask boils, turn off the heat

Second flask keeps boiling, pushing steam into the first flask. The essential oils of the herb attach to the vapors and travel through the apparatus into the receiving flask.

Continue distillation until receiving flask is full or there is no more water in boiling flasks.

Cohobate the distillate back over the herbs and let sit for 24 hours.

Repeat the distillation and cohobation for a total of 3 distillations.

Transfer final distillate to a separatory funnel and collect the oil into an amber glass vial.

Extracting Alchemical Salt from Dried Herbs

Weigh the herb body and record the data.

Roast and incinerate the herb body in a ceramic pot, outdoors, until no more smoke is given off.

It is okay to use metal as we are driving off any organic material and the final salt will be a pure mineral (Potassium Carbonate)

Weigh the incinerated ash and record the data.

Transfer the ash to a crucible and grind with the pestle.

Calcine the ash on a hotplate until it reaches a light-grey or white color.

Weigh the ash and record the data

Transfer the calcined ash to a glass beaker

Add cold distilled water to the beaker.

Fill beaker to about 10X the volume of the ash.

Stir well while slowly heating the beaker on the stove.

Let the water/ash solution settle for at least 30 minutes.

Decant the solution into an Erlenmeyer flash through a funnel.

The glass funnel should be stopped with a cotton ball and lined with a paper coffee filter.

Continue to add cold distilled water, stirring, heating, settling and decanting until the water/ash solution no longer shows a pH any more alkaline than the distilled water used.

Transfer the solution in the Erlenmeyer flask into a Pyrex baking dish.

Evaporate the liquid in a 175°F oven until there is no more moisture.

Scrape the salts from the Pyrex with glass or metal tools

Weigh the salts.

Repeat steps 7-16 until salts have been leached a total of three times

This will ensure that the salts are absolutely pure.

The salts will clearly be more crystalline after three washes.

Spagyric Essences

Extract the Alchemical Sulfur according to the method of Our Art.

Store the collected oil in an amber glass vial

After the herb body cools, begin fermentation.

First method: add an amount of the dried herb and mix with the plant soup.

Second method: add an amount of brewer’s yeast and some sugar.

When fermentation has ceased, distill off all the alcohol with reflux.

Remove ‘soup’ and separate.

Press out all liquid.

Extract the alchemical Salt from the herb body by the methods of Our Art.

Extract the alchemical Salt of Sulfur from the liquid by the methods of Art.

Rectify the alcohol while the salts are calcining.

Add the Salt to the distilled and rectified spirits and shake vigorously.

Finally, add the Sulfur and again, shake vigorously.

Spagyric Extracts

At a ratio of between 5:1 and 8:1 macerate a dried herb in brandy or a vodka.

Grind the herb to a fine powder.

Wrap the opening of the mason jar with plastic wrap.

Do not fill the mason jar more than half.

Incubate the maceration for a philosophic month at 30-40°C.

Shake the maceration twice per day while focusing on the energy.

Decant the extract, press and filter the herb body into amber glass.

Roast, incinerate and calcine the herb body to a light-grey color.

Leach the water-soluble salts by the method of Our Art.

Add the white ash to the extract.

Digest for a philosophic month in 30-40°C heat.

Shake twice per day.

Spagyric Plant Stone – First Method

Extract Sulfur from an herb by the methods of Our Art.

Ferment and extract the spirit.

Rectify to 95% pure.

Extract and collect the water-soluble Salts.

Allow Salt to absorb the Solar Sulfur

Place Salt in a Pyrex dish

On day of ruling planet, place salts outside at 2am. Salts should melt overnight and crystallize by noon. By this method, the salts absorb the solar sulfur.

Grind and weigh the salts, then calcine.

On next planetary day, repeat the Solar Absorption process.

Do this a total of 3 times.

Pour salts into an even layer in a mason jar.

Pour enough essential oil over the salts so there is slight excess of oil floating above the salts.

Seal mason jar and incubate at 40°C for one week.

On next planetary day, check and add oil if all has absorbed., then incubate for another week.

When the salt refuses any more oil, do the same thing with the rectified spirit.

When the salt/sulfur mix refuses to absorb any more spirit, the stone is done.

Spagyric Plant Stone – Second Method

Steam distill to extract the Sulfur.

Ferment the remaining plant soup, preferably without the addition of yeast.

Add some fresh plant to the soup to aid fermentation.

Distill off the alcohol and rectify to at least 90% purity.

Extract the Salis.

Imbibe the salts with a 50/50 mix of Sulfur and Mercury.

Digest this 40/40.

Saturate again with the 50/50 mix of Sulfur and Mercury.

Slowly vacuum distill to dryness under a vacuum.

Remove the Salt and calcine them.

They can be removed using alcohol, which is slowly evaporated.

Repeat Steps 5-9 twice more.

The substance should be dark red and should melt like wax.

Grind the solid substance to a powder.

Imbibe with 50/50 mix and circulate for 21 days.

Color should now be a light brown.

Reduce again to a powder, imbibe and circulate.

Repeat until substance no longer absorbs the mix and melts perfectly like wax, with no smoke.

Creation of Absolute Alcohol

Calcine an amount of Potassium Carbonate at 350°C for a minimum of one hour

For 90% alcohol – 50/50 mix of Salt/Alcohol

For 95% alcohol – 200g/Liter

Then 100g/Liter

Finally 25g/Liter

Macerate Salt in the Alcohol for 24 hours, shaking often.

Distill using a vacuum until the surface of the boiling liquid is just reaching the top of the residue.

Filter the alcohol, then check purity with the hydrometer.

Collect the distillate in an air-tight amber glass container, filled to the top to limit air exposure.

Method to Recover Salt and Alcohol from Retort

Add an amount of distilled water equal to the amount of alcohol remaining in the retort.

Shake vigorously then let settle.

The alcohol and water should form two distinct layers.

Siphon off the top layer of alcohol.

Transfer the dissolved salts into a Pyrex dish and evaporate. Recalcine before further use.

Creation of a Spagyric Elixir using Diethyl Ether

Macerate herb 8:1 with spiritus vini in 30°C incubator for 21 days or longer.

Pour off the tincture into a distillation flask.

Press herb body to maximize liquid tincture.

Distill under vacuum at low temp to separate the Sulfur-Oil from the Tincture-Water.

The fixed sulfur stays in the distillation flask with the tincture-water.

Add an amount of ether to the residue in the distillation flask.

The ether will dissolve the fixed sulfur.

Transfer the ether/residue solution to oil separator.

The ether is lighter than water and thus will form a layer on top.

Open the stopcock and drain off the bottom layer.

Add more distilled water to the separator and shake well.

After it settles, drain again.

Repeat process of adding water, shaking, and draining until the layer of water is no longer tinted.

Perfectly clear bottom layer of water means that the top layer of ether, and thus the fixed sulfur, has been washed clean.

Drain the ether into Pyrex dish and evaporate the ether.

The remaining residue is the fixed sulfur.

Calcine the herb body as usual.

Calcine, dissolve, evaporate- repeat at least three times.

Add the Sal Salis to the mercury/sulfur distillate and macerate overnight.

Add the Sal Sulfuris to the mixture and allow to digest for another 21 days.

Creation of the Alkahest

Rectify one gallon of red wine 7 times as previously instructed. Save the alcohol.

Gently boil off the wine soup until it is hard and tar-like.

Take three 2-liter plastic bottles and fill them with vinegar, freeze without their caps.

Invert the bottle over funnels placed in three empty 2-liter bottles.

Concentrated vinegar will drip out.

In a few hours a plug of ice will form, stopping the top bottle.

Save the ice plug and discard the water in the top bottle.

Rectify the distillate this way for a total of 7 runs.

Distill the collected acetic acid in a sand bath very slowly.

At 100°C water will come over. Discard this.

From 103°-105°C purified acetic acid will come over. Collect this.

Save the colored reside in the distillation flask and add it to the ice plugs.

Rectify the distillate 3 more times with the sand bath.

Distill off the water only; do not let the spirits fly. Keep the temperature 100-102°C.

Evaporate off the colored residue and ice plugs to a hardened tar.

Calcine, grind and extract the salts from this and the wine soup- do this three times.

Pour an amount of alcohol over the salts, and then exhale it off via water bath distillation. Repeat this at least 7 more times.

This volatilizes the salt and mineralizes the alcohol.

To the salt residue left in the distillation flask, add enough phlegm of wine to dissolve.

Test the pH. It should be very alkaline.

Also add a small amount of the rectified acetic acid

Add just enough to bring the pH to neutral.

Let all the liquid evaporate off.

Distill the salt in a sand bath until the body rises and unites with the spirit.

Make sure the drip spout is submerged under the surface of some alcohol in the receiving flask.

Calcine the salts that are left in the distillation flask, and then repeat the process of dissolving and distilling.

Repeat until all or most of the body has united with the spirit.

Circulate the body/spirit mixture for 14 days, rhythmically (with the sun and the moon).

The body has thus been spiritualized. This menstruum will separate the sulfur from an herb in very little time, and is useful to extract the oils of minerals.

Collection of Philosophic Sal Ammoniac

Collect a few liters of fresh \"philosophical dew\".

Test the sodium level

Distill then calcine the residue. If it sputters during calcinations, there is too much sodium chloride. Restrict diet and try again.

Incubate the collected \"philosophical dew\" at 40°C for 40 days.

Distill to dryness.

Vacuum distill at the end because Sal Ammoniac will become unphilosophical at high temperatures.

Dissolve the residue in warm distilled water.

Pour this into a Pyrex dish and evaporate.

If it is pure, crystals will form.

Collect the crystals in a sealed glass jar.

Van Helmont’s Menstruum

Grind an amount of Philosophic Sal Ammoniac.

Macerate Philosophic Sal Ammoniac and Absolute Alcohol for 6 months at 40°C.

Distill this maceration under a vacuum.

There should be no residue.

This is our menstruum.

Van Helmont’s Menstruum - Second Method

Collect healthy \"philosophical dew\".

Ferment 40/40 then filter into a distillation apparatus.

Slowly distill to dryness using a vacuum.

Cohobate the distillate over the residue.

Digest 40/40

Slowly distill to dryness using a vacuum.

Cohobate the distillate over the residue.

Digest 40/40.

Slowly distill to dryness using a vacuum.

Store the distillate in amber glass as “Alkahest of \"philosophical dew\"”.

Increase the heat in the retort.

A white sublime vapor will rise and crystallize.

This is the “Volatile Salts of \"philosophical dew\"”

Macerate the Alkahest over the Salts for 40/40.

This is our menstruum.

Philosophical Alcohol – aka Kerkring’s Menstruum

Sublimate an amount of store bought Ammonium Chloride.

Heat a 2cm layer in a Pyrex dish with a glass lid.

As a thick layer forms on the lid, scrape this off and save.

Continue until nothing but a black mass is left in the Pyrex dish.

Discard the Caput and heat the collected residue.

Again, collect the residue as it forms on the lid.

Continue the rectification until there is no black mass ever left over.

During the new moon, mix 4 parts Salt with 10 parts Alcohol by weight.

Macerate this mixture 40/40 .

Distill slowly under vacuum until dry.

Pour the distillate back over the residue and macerate another 40/40.

Distill again.

Cohobate and macerate 40/40.

On third distillation, collect the distillate in an air tight amber glass bottle.

Collect the residue.

Add an amount of distilled water equal to the amount of alcohol remaining in the retort.

Shake, then let settle.

The water and alcohol should form two separate layers.

Siphon off the top layer of alcohol.

Pour out the dissolved salts into a Pyrex dish.

Evaporate and save for future use.

To reuse, heat in a dry vacuum distillation apparatus for one hour.

Radical Vinegar of the Ancients

Oxidize scraps of copper (black oxide) in an oven.

Fill a flask with the scraps and ordinary red wine vinegar.

Macerate for 2 weeks, then decant and filter.

Evaporate the liquid off the copper and collect the green-blue crystals of copper acetate as they form.

This is the Salt of the Metal.

When you have collected enough, dry them carefully in a 225°F oven.

Dry distill the crystals and collect the light blue liquid.

Rectify this liquid until it is perfectly white.

This is our product.

Collect the copper powder and repeat the process from step one.

Distilled Vinegar – Cold Reinforced

Fill plastic bottles full of red wine vinegar.

Leave three or four inches of space below the cap.

Freeze the bottles for at least 12 hours.

Invert the bottles over an empty plastic bottle with a funnel.

A red liquid will flow quickly.

Switch receivers every 150ml,

As soon as the block of ice is white, stop the separation and discard the ice.

Combine the separate receivers into 4 empty plastic bottles

Combine all first collections, second, third, fourth.

Freeze the new bottles and separate again the same way.

Titrate a sample of the finished product.

Desired purity is at least 20%.

Purification of Native Sulfur – Crystalline 2kg

Crystallize Sulfur.

Detach the crystals from the host, if any.

Crush the crystals in a dry atmosphere.

If there might be any moisture, heat the crushed crystals in a flask using a vacuum and a water-bath.

Input a flask of calcined potassium carbonate into the circuit to desiccate.

Purification of Native Sulfur – Sulfur + Limestone

Sulfur with Limestone.

Pulverize and fill a Soxhlet extractor.

Heath with a water-bath and use carbon tetrachloride as the solvent.

Distill off the tetrachloride under a vacuum with a desiccator flask in the circuit.

Pure crystalline sulfur will remain in the retort.

Distill the crystals in a water-bath under vacuum with a desiccator flask and a receiver immersed in a bath of ice water and salt.

This will eliminate the smell of the tetrachloride.

Alkahest of Sulfur

Pour the sulfur crystals to fill 1/10 of a mason jar.

Cover with philosophical alcohol to 1/3 of the jar.

Seal with plastic or a ground glass stopper. Do not use native rubber.

Digest at 40°C for a Lunar Month, then in a cool spot for another Lunar Month.

Do not move or handle the jar during the cool period.

When crystals appear, remove them and allow more to grow.

When you have enough, distill slowly in a water-bath and a receiver immersed in salt and ice water.

Recover the alkahest and the oil.

Vinegar of Antimony

Calcine stibnite in thin layers for a few hours at 300-350°C to expel arsenic and sulfur.

Put the pieces into a Soxhlet extractor with distilled rainwater.

Extract for 2 weeks to 3 months until the water is acidic (pH 1-2)

Distillation of this gives the Vinegar of Antimony.

Method to Extract the Sulfur from Minerals and Crystals

Take one pound of the mineral and break it into quarter sized pieces.

Heat in a crucible at 600-800°C for one hour.

Immediately dump the pieces into a stainless steel pot of distilled water.

Soak for twenty minutes, then drain.

Repeat until crystals are completely white and can be broken by hand.

BE CAREFUL. SHARP!!

Pulverize the crystals into a powder.

Transfer to an Erlenmeyer flask.

Pour over this the Alkahest.

Cork the flask and seal with wax.

Digest 40/40.

Transfer flask to a cool, dark place for two weeks.

Decant and filter twice.

Gently distill.

Receiver should be immersed in an ice-water bath.

The thick oil left in the retort is the philosophical Sulfur of the mineral.

Administer 1-2 drops diluted to receive the full benefits of the mineral’s power.

Preparation of the Undetermined Archaeus of Water

Materials needed:

4 x 1 liter amber glass bottles

12 x 330 ml amber glass bottles (12oz)

Label the bottles:

1 liter – Fire, Water, Air, Earth

330 ml – Sulfur, Mercury, Salt of Fire, Water, Air, Earth

Absorb an amount of Universal Sulfur into purified plant Salt.

The amount will be 25g for every liter of rainwater collected.

Plant salt should have undergone at least three purifications.

Spread a thin layer of the Salt in a Pyrex dish.

Place the dish outside in Spring, at about 2200hrs, one foot off the ground, with a clear view of the night sky.

Collect the dish at sunrise.

Salts should have begun to liquefy

Do not touch!

Distill Salt immediately under vacuum and gentle heat.

The distillate is our universal Sulfur- store it in amber glass in refrigerator.

Collect 4 liters of thunderstorm rain water.

Filter, and then distill once.

Add the universal Sulfur.

Ferment the water in a dark room at 38°C.

Use a paper filter and rubber band to close the bottle.

Ferment until a tan slime forms and subsequently falls to the bottom.

Distill the four liters using a water-bath.

First liter is the Fire, second liter is the Air, third liter is the Water, fourth liter is the Earth.

All should have a pH of 5.

Leave about 200ml in the retort.

This contains the universal Gur, the universal seed, and should be near pH 8.0

Pour the remaining water into a Pyrex dish and evaporate in an oven at 150°F.

Collect the Gur as it appears brown and silky.

Distill the liters of elemental water, one at a time, using the water-bath.

First 330ml is the Sulfur, second 330ml is the Mercury, third 330ml is the Salt.

Take 100ml from each 330ml flask and combine into elemental bottles:

100ml from Sulfur, Mercury and Salt of Fire into one bottle, etc., for Air, Water and Earth.

Check pH: Fire- 5.7, Air- 5.6, Water- 5.2, Earth- 4.7

Circulate these 4 bottles for a Lunar Month.

Take 100ml from these 4 bottles and combine into one single flask.

This flask contains the undetermined Archaeus of Water.

The pH of this liquid should be 4.8

Circulate this single flask for a Lunar Month.

Preparation of an Alchemical Seed Determined to a Particular Realm

Follow the previous instructions for creation of the Gur and the Archaeus of Water.

At Step 12, you must decide which realm you with to determine your Gur and Archaeus to.

Take an amount of liquid from each of the 4 elemental bottles and combine into a single flask and circulate for a Lunar Month.

Mineral

Earth – 60

Water – 20

Air – 5

Fire – 5

Vegetable

Earth – 10

Water – 60

Air – 60

Fire – 5

Animal

Earth – 10

Water – 5

Air – 60

Fire – 60

Circulate as before, as long as desired.

Imbibe the Gur with the Archaeus.

It should be moist but not flowing.

Let it dry, and then imbibe again.

Keep the flask closed during digestion.

Open the flask and cease imbibitions once the Gur won’t absorb any more.

Creation of Copper Acetate

Immerse some copper pieces in Oil of Vitriol (Diluted sulfuric acid).

This dissolves the copper, making a lot of fumes and bubbles.

Let the liquid settle and evaporate it over low heat.

The copper sulfate will dry into crystals.

Dissolve the crystals in heated distilled water, as much as it will take.

Dissolve an equal amount of potassium carbonate into the same amount of distilled water as previously used for the copper sulfate.

Slowly add the copper sulfate solution to the potassium carbonate solution while stirring.

A blue-green precipitate will appear with a spongy mass. This is ‘verditer’- copper carbonate, a man-made malachite.

The longer you wait after mixing, the darker the verditer will become.

Attaining a dark blue color is tricky. This is the man-made azurite.

After all is mixed together, filter and wash the precipitate until the runoff is pH 7.

Slowly evaporate this to form copper carbonate crystals.

Slowly add vinegar.

The solution will fizz considerably.

Slowly evaporate this to form copper acetate crystals (verdigris)

Oil of Vitriol (Sulfuric Acid)

Heat ferrous sulfate until the material ceases evolving steam.

i.e. Dephlegm

Do not overheat. The purpose to just to eliminate any moisture in the material.

The material will lose its green-blue color and appear green-yellow.

Let the material cool, then place it in a boiling flask and distill at temperatures nearing 1000°C.

The receiving flask must be immersed in a salt-ice bath.

At ~400°C the ferrous sulfate begins to decompose and will turn red.

The receiver will collect a clear vapor, which condenses into a highly acidic, clear liquid.

This distillation may take up to 5 hours.

The distillate is our Oil of Vitriol.

It should have a pH of 0.

The residue in the boiling flask will yield a white salt.

Aqua Fortis (Nitric Acid, Spirit of Niter)

Heat ferrous sulfate until the material ceases evolving steam.

i.e. Dephlegm

Do not overheat. The purpose to just to eliminate any moisture in the material.

The material will lose its green-blue color and appear green-yellow.

Let this cool, then mix 2:1 with potassium nitrate.

Distill for ~4 hours.

At 500°C a red gas will begin to form.

This condenses into a highly acidic yellow-red liquid.

The distillate is our Aqua Fortis and should have a pH of 0.

The residue in the boiling flask will yield a white salt.

Spirit of Salt (Hydrochloric Acid)

Mix three parts fuller’s earth (cosmetic clay) with one part sea salt.

Distill at temperatures over 850°C.

A white vapor will condense into a clear, highly acidic liquid with a pH of 0.

Aqua Regia (Nitro-hydrochloric acid)

Mix together Aqua Fortis (Nitric Acid) and Spirit of Salt (Hydrochloric Acid) in a 1:3 ratio.

The product will be a fuming yellow or red solution with a pH of 0.

Production of an Alchemical Elixir – Method One

Digest a tincture on its salts for a week.

Distill everything.

Mercury will pass first.

Next will come the Sulfur as a thick white vapor.

Some volatile salts may or may not pass over.

The distillate will be clear or pale yellow.

The residue in the boiling flask is the organic salts of Salt and Sulfur.

Dissolve the residue with a bit of the Mercury, evaporate slowly.

Calcine the resulting salts and leech as usual.

Pour the distillate over the salts and digest for one week.

The tincture should be a pale rose color at this point.

The neck of the flask should be outside of the incubator during digestion.

Distill again and collect the salts, as before.

Pour the distillate over the salts and digest for another week.

Repeat the cycle of Distillation and Digestion until the tincture is a ruby red color.

Note this might take anywhere from 2 months to 1 year.

This cycle slowly spiritualizes, or volatilizes, the salts.

Finish the product by decanting and filtering once.

Alkahest of Tartar

Take Red Tartar in pieces 1cm long.

Distill the pieces in complete air-tightness over a hotplate.

The receiver must be immersed in a salted ice bath.

Increase the temperature slowly.

After the phlegm passes, switch to a receiver that has been kept cold in a refrigerator.

The spirit passes with a thick white vapor.

This will condense into the Alkahest and oil.

Finally a foul black oil will pass over.

At this point the distillation is completed.

Slowly cool down the boiling flask.

Take the distillate and redistill in a water-bath.

The Alkahest will pass over first, then a yellow, pleasant smelling oil.

The oil is the Oil of Tartar and has exquisite healing properties.

Titration of Acetic Acid Solution

Pour 1.5 ml of acetic acid solution into a beaker or Erlenmeyer flask.

Wear gloves and safety goggles.

Dilute the vinegar with ~50 ml distilled water.

Does not have to be exact.

Add 3 drops of 0.5% phenolphthalein solution.

Alternatively, fix into place a pH meter.

Fill a burette with a 0.1 M solution of sodium hydroxide.

Record the starting level of the liquid.

Read from the bottom of the meniscus.

Be as accurate as possible.

Slowly drip the sodium hydroxide solution into the acetic acid solution.

After each drop, swirl the flask or stir the beaker with a glass stir rod.

Due to the phenolphthalein, the solution will briefly turn pink, but will revert to clear upon stirring.

When the acetic acid solution turns pink and remains so even after stirring, the titration is complete.

Alternatively, the pH meter will read 8.3 when the titration is completed, indicating that the acidic solution is now slightly alkaline.

Record the ending level of the sodium hydroxide solution in the burette.

Read from the bottom of the meniscus.

Be as accurate as possible.

Subtract the initial level from the ending level of the sodium hydroxide solution.

Repeat the titration three times for accuracy.

Analysis of the Data

Determine the number of moles of sodium hydroxide use to titrate the acetic acid.

Multiply the volume of added sodium hydroxide (in liters) by the concentration (in moles/liter).

For example, if you added 12.5 ml of sodium hydroxide, the number of moles would be 0.0125 L x 0.1 moles/L = 0.00125 moles.

Determine the concentration of acetic acid in the solution.

The number of moles of sodium hydroxide equals the number of moles of acetic acid in the solution sample.

Continuing with the previous example, the number of moles of acetic acid would be 0.00125. Divide this number by the volume (in liters) of acetic acid sampled. The quotient is the moles of acetic acid per liter. In this example 0.00125 x 0.0015 L = 0.833 moles per liter.

To calculate in grams/liter (or % concentration) multiply the molar concentration of acetic acid by the molecular mass of acetic acid, which is 60. In our example, 0.833 x 60 = 50 g/L or 50% concentration of acetic acid.
