one of the initial books everyone says is "The Golden Chain of Homer"
Also, if you stay interested in alchemy, everyone always seems to obtain the RAMS archive. This is located here:

http://www.ramsdigital.com/buy.html

it is WELL worth the money, but there are also other ways of acquiring it but if one can afford it, one should indeed purchase it.

One must learn to stand up and walk before trying to run. In the same way, before studying alchemy, you'd better get yourself used to work in the lab, with glassware, distillations, and chemistry. Training yourself with common wine distillations, learning how to obtain a good rectified spirit of wine, is a perfect exercise to learn how to regulate the fire. In the while, read something about spagyrics and simple plant works. One of the first book to read is "The practical handbook of plant alchemy" of Manfred Junius.

Potpourri alchemia. it is a magnificent piece of the RAMS pie. You could always look at Flamel's work, or the mutus libre. The list goes on. But EVERYTHING you need to know is in potpourri alchemia. Pay attention to pages 163-164.

Funny I was just reading that book the other day.
