There are said two be two ferments or "drives" inside each metal. One is the red and one is the white. These are the forces that push a metal towards the state of perfection. Depending on the amount of each a certain metal has, is how that metal will exist. Most always the red and white metals will show in their appearance. For instance copper and gold are red metals and silver and antimony are white metals.

All metals contain either the red/gold/sulphur principle, or the white/silver/mercury principle. Metals are clearly grouped under each principle. (e.g. copper, gold and iron are grouped under red/gold/sulphur and tin, mercury, antimony, lead and silver are grouped under the white/silver/mercury. There are other metallic elements that are grouped under both principles.
