In the Ruesenstein P. 129
>>One of Gualdus' Particulars<<

Gualdo says you should extract a tincture out of >>the sign of mars (iron) << with dest. vinagar, put it in a warm place and it would get blood red.

I have tried it with iron filings which draw only a light/dark brown or black tincture. I have tried it with iron nails which give a brown tincture.
It's not Iron IIIoxide Haematite because it is red in the beginning and therefore doesn't tinge the vinagar red in time. Could it be Vitriol of iron FeSO4 that would turn to blood red?

Has anyone an idea which iron compound it could be?

Frank

Hi Frank, I'm not sure if this helps...

"Hematite ranges in color from a reddish-brown to gray and even black."

ref: http://www.rockstone.biz/minerals/red-iron-oxide.php

I hope this helps.

best wishes

May be vinegar it's the matter to correct.
In some cases people say that you can put togheter commercial or distilled vinegar or acetic acid "glaciale" (freezing?)...
Of course you know that you should freeze your normal vinegar and distill etc...
But I think that is not so easy to find a very good vinegar to work with and that in some cases can be fundamental don't have any preservatives or whatever in it.
Luck.

Many Thanks Karitsis, and Zosimo,

Gualdo left the tincture to stand until it was red as blood. So it was a different colour when he poured on the vinegar. Hematite is red and colours the vinegar red as soon as you pour it over.

I used freezed and distilled wine and apple vinegar.

So we need another solution.

Frank.

Mars, the proud conqueror, has different names grounding in planet hearth.
Pyrite? Magnetite?
Our Friends were aknowledged about these symbols.

Yes pyrite and vitriol of iron are the two solutions I favor but I am open for more ideas.

Thanks Auggie,

Fe2O3 the red ironoxide you are referring to is Hematite which is red and stays red when you pour vinagar over it. But as above mentioned Gualdus talks of iron or an iron compound that isn't red in the beginning but gets red as a result of the extraction by vinagar in warmth.

The Pyrite also is called gold of the stupids:)
Pyrite exists in nature in many forms like chalcopyrite and also arsenical chalcopyrite.
