I am attempting to make a spagyrical elixir, but as most of us know,i am gonna be needing alcohol for this.Since i am not in position to purchase vodka or brandy(i am just not able to right now),i was wondering if it is possible that i can distill it.The only available sources i have is wine and some tequila but i dont know if it is going to be the same. Also,i read that some tequilas might also contain some methanol so i am not really sure about how to act.

Any suggestions?

Yes you can distill either of those to extract the alcohol from them. Brandy is in fact the distilled spirit of wine. You only get 7-10% of the volume of wine as alcohol but if there is still living yeast in your wine then you can save out 1 ounce before distillation (boiling the wine kills the yeast) and then add it back to the remaining wine after it cools to let it referment. You may also want to add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the wine each time you do this so the yeast has something to eat.

One thing to remember when you distill is to pay attention to the temperature. Since alcohol has a much lower boiling point than water your flask will be below the boiling point of water while the alcohol is distilling out. When most all the alcohol has distilled out then the boiling will slow down for a few seconds and it will get hotter and resume boiling but with a different bubble size. This is the easiest way to tell when it's done.

The second easiest way to tell is water steam condenses at a much higher temperature than alcohol steam. If you touch the condenser with alcohol distilling out it should feel only slightly warmer than you want to hold on to,with water distilling out you cannot continue to touch the condenser for any length of time without being burnt, however chances are you'll let go before you actually are burnt.

Thanks for the quick reply. In fact i was thinking of using a double(or maybe triple) boiler (Balneo Mariae) to hold the temprature below 100 C.I have enough wine to give me the necessary alcohol required for the operation.Ahh also, does it matter if the bowl where the alcohol distills is a metallic one,or should it not come in contact with metal surfaces and such?
