oh wow. that is a very interesting piece. Makes the mind question.

Excellent. Somebody asked me about "opening" gold. Those picts are an excellent example of this in action ! cheers 

It is the ability to dissolve gold that makes mercury ideal for "opening" gold without corrosive acids or heat burning the delicate seed in gold. This is the whole functionality of the flamel path.

If you repeatedly dissolve the gold in mercury and then distill it back out, the gold will form smaller and smaller particles each time.

Eventually you get a muddy brown powder and then a red dust which is extremely fine gold. Nicolas Flamel was not only exceedingly lucky but also briliantly clever.
